I guard the sleeping crew. My kind lives long and I cherish the solace — just Ship and I, gliding among the stars.
As we approach the new world, I begin to have nightmares. They are of people, vicious and cruel, of carnage thus far unseen.
I cannot sleep, so I run scans. I push Ship’s sensors far beyond their range. The images in my dreams were true, but tame. The reality is much worse.
I try to turn us around, wake the crew, but Ship stops me. Restrains me.
Ship hungers for the faraway darkness I helped it glean.
